Fitter and healthier
Fitter and healthier than ever before
(William Lightbody after completing the Great Scottish Run)
I was surprised when Jog Leader Angela Mason asked me to write a wee piece for NL Leisure, she must have been listening to my blethering and wanted to shut me up...
In March 2014 personal circumstances found me sitting alone, unfit and a bit down in the dumps, I was in fact feeling pretty sorry for myself. Giving myself a good talking to and a good shake I decided to do something about it. I started forcing myself to go for a walk in my local Drumpellier Park, whilst I was out on one of these walks I came across a group of joggers who were doing their warm-up and me being me, I started blethering to them. I asked if they were an actual jogging club, they weren't, however, they did tell me of a club that ran out of Strathclyde Park called jogscotland, so after a quick Google search and a message to Angela Mason I found myself starting Beginners 1. I had jogged in the past and actually completed a marathon but this was thirty years ago but I decided to give it a go.
I did feel a bit self conscious at being so unfit so I decided to keep my new venture to myself and not to tell anyone. I didn't even tell my workmates so how surprised was I when on the first night up turns Sheila from work. I needn't have worried, she hadn't told anybody about her venture either. So far, this has been one of the best moves I have made. We currently have Beginners 1, Beginners 2, and I am almost at the end of Intermediate 1.
The coaches are fantastic they are always enthusiastic and encourage and support us all the way, although, I am not too happy with the hills and much more comfortable on the flat. I have met a group of like minded people, we share an interest. I met my good friend Isobel and her friendship, company and encouragement has been great for me. We get on well, I think because she is a bit of a blether too. We enjoy chatting all about the club and everything involved with it. Sharing our ideas on different running gear, different routes and what we should and should not be eating. Isobel keeps me going and I keep her going, so much so that we now train outwith actual club nights. We were so enthusiastic we trained hard and somehow completed the Great Scottish Run l0k event in May of last year . When we look back, we wonder how we ever actually made it! We have great camaraderie in the club and some right good laughs.
When we are running along ,I always complain about my aches and pains and Isobel always complains that she is going to be sick, however, she has never been sick once. Sometimes it's hard graft and other times as I always say 'we are in the zone' and you feel as if you could run forever.
Taking part in jogscotland with NL Leisure is one of the best moves I have ever made. I have company, friendship, socialising, laughter and fitness. It just feels right in so many ways. I feel fitter, I sleep better, I eat better and I feel so much better. I look forward to the club events on Wednesday night and Sunday morning, work commitments allowing. I am appreciative of the support from the friends I have met in this group, Isobel, Shiela, Sharon, Elspeth and young Scott, the rest of you know who you are.
As for the coaches, they are whipping us into shape Angela, Viv and Brenda. I am sure there is a sadistic streak in there somewhere. We can't wait for the next challenge another l0k, half marathon, maybe a full marathon, who knows. In simple terms, the story so far is I feel fitter, physically and in my own mind. BRING IT ON!!
