Coffee and Cake with Connor Wallace

James explains ‘Connor has a mild form of autism and initially joined our team in 2012 to gain valuable work experience when he was a pupil at Firpark High School. He enjoyed working here so much that after the placement was finished Connor volunteered to work one day a week in the café. Connor is a great addition to our team, the customers and the staff love having him around as he’s such a happy, positive guy and he works really hard.’

The café offers a comfortable place for our members and visitors to relax and is providing Connor with an opportunity to build his confidence and learn new skills. Asked what he liked about the job Connor replied ‘Everything! The staff here have become like a second family to me and I’m enjoying more independence as I’m now confident enough to get the bus to and from work instead of a taxi. I love meeting new people, having a chat, learning about food preparation and catering for big events.’

As well as his budding catering career with Café NL, Connor studies an ASN Prospects course at New Lanarkshire College. He has aspirations of taking on a second job in another profession so that he can continue to learn and enhance his skills. We are delighted to support Connor as he works towards achieving his goals.

NL Leisure works closely with Enable Scotland who campaign for a better life for children and adults with learning disabilities. NL Catering has supported several placements for Enable Scotland at multiple venues and the feedback from students and supervising staff has been excellent.
