North Lanarkshire athletes get set for International Children's Games

Youngsters from North Lanarkshire are in the final preparation stages ahead of departing for Australia for the 48th International Children's Games, which takes place between 6 – 11 December in Lake Macquarie.

North Lanarkshire have entered eight footballers, four swimmers and two golfers into the competition. The 14 athletes will be supported by three coaches, a city representative and a head of delegation.

The children, aged between 12 and 15, had to either be resident in the North Lanarkshire area or attend a school in the region meet the eligibility criteria. The youngsters will be joined by a coach for each sport.

In 2011, a joint bid between North and South Lanarkshire brought the Games to Scotland for the first time, with a number of North Lanarkshire Leisure venues hosting some of the best young athletes from the participating cities.

The International Children's Games (ICG) is the largest multi-sport youth games in the world and is a recognised member of the International Olympic Committee. Approximately 1,500 athletes between 12 and 15 years of age participate in the event each year.

The Children's Games was started by Slovenian sports instructor Metod Klemenc, who was born 1934 in Ljubljana, suffered the consequences of the second world war and wanted to create something which brought young people together. In 1968 the inaugural International Children's Games took place.
Blane Dodds, Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure, said:

North Lanarkshire was honoured to host some of the best young athletes from around the world when the games came to Lanarkshire in 2011 and it's fantastic to continue the legacy of the event, supporting the next generation of young athletes."
