NLL Legend – Michael Duffy
Our latest NLL Legend is Michael Duffy! Mikey who is a keen Ice Hockey player and recently captained the UK prospects team to a 4-3 victory against Mexico whilst in Bratislava.
We caught up with Mikey to hear all about his experience and his future ambitions in the sport.
You can read his story below:
1.Tell us a bit about yourself?
Michael (Mikey) Duffy is 11 years old. He has just left St Gerard’s primary in Bellshill and due to start cardinal Newman high school after the summer holidays.
2. How did you get involved with Ice Hockey?
Michael joined his first ‘Learn to Play’ class a couple of years ago at the Time Capsule. He had gone to a Braehead Clan match for his birthday, and after seeing his first Ice Hockey game he was hooked! He could barely skate when he went but he absolutely loved it. After this he got a pair of roller-blades and a hockey stick and would be out practicing in the street every day. This, along with his brilliant coaches helped his skating skills massively and after 6 months he was asked to join the under 10’s team. Michael progressed brilliantly and started to excel in the defence position.
Michael soon moved up to the under 12’s group and was soon playing in league matches with his team.
3. How did you feel when you were selected for the UK Prospects squad?
After attending trials for the Scotland squad in Dundee, Mikey was soon attending tournaments down south in Sheffield. During these tournaments the best 8 players from Scotland were picked to attend further development days and from this a team was chosen that would represent the UK in Bratislava. Mikey was part of this team and he really enjoyed representing the team abroad.
4. Captaining the team to a 4-3 victory is an excellent achievement, tell us a bit about the game?
Captaining the UK team was a huge honour, the team played against Mexico and came out on top with a brilliant 4-3 victory. Mikey led the warm up and helped motivate the team, keeping them positive throughout.
5. What are your future ambitions within the sport?
Mikey hopes to try out for the Scotland squad again in the new season in October. He would love to represent Scotland in the under 13's team. He is also hoping that there will be some more tournaments with the UK prospects team and this would continue to grow and develop. The ultimate dream would be to play for GB in the Olympics!
All of us here at NL Leisure would like to say a huge well done to Mikey on his excellent achievements, we’re sure that he has a big future in the sport and look forward to hearing more about his development! Well done Mikey!
