Anna's Story

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Anna, I am 18 years old. I am a student at college, and I study sports coaching and development.

2. When did you first get involved in gymnastics?

I started gymnastics when I was 2 and my mum took me a toddler gymnastics class, from there I went to gymnastics until the age of 7, and then again from age 10. Gymnastics was always the only sport I was interested in, I was always doing cartwheels in the playground and going to school gymnastics clubs!

3. How long have you been volunteering with NL Leisure for?

I have been volunteering at NL Leisure since November 2018, 7 months now.

4. What’s your favourite thing about volunteering / coaching?

My favourite thing is being able to help people and seeing the gymnasts improve and learn new things. As a volunteer I learn something new every day and every day is different!

5. What would you say to anybody who is interested in volunteering with NLL / getting involved in sports coaching?

Go for it! It is such a great experience, all the staff and coaches have been incredible and so supportive. The Sports Development team made it so easy to get involved and have given me some great opportunities. Rebecca and Alanna the coaches I have been working with have been great in supporting and teaching me how to coach. So, if you’re thinking about it definitely give it a go.

6. Any other comments?

If anyone is interested in taking part in gymnastics or volunteering, it’s a great sport to be a part of so definitely take part or sign up if you’re thinking about it!

Jennifer’s Story

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

My name is Jennifer Murray and I am seventeen years old. I have recently finished my 6th year exams and am hoping to attend Strathclyde University to study ‘Sport and Physical Activityʼ in September subject to meeting my conditions.

2. When did you first get involved in gymnastics?

At the age of 3 I started attending preschool gymnastics classes where my love for the sport truly began. From here, I continued classes up until the age of fourteen.

3. How long have you been volunteering with NL Leisure for?

Throughout the past six months I have been volunteering at weekly gymnastics classes gaining experience and skills needed to coach a wide age range.

4. What’s your favourite thing about volunteering / coaching?

Watching children progress and gain in confidence is the main reason why I was drawn to volunteering. As I have applied to a sports course at university I believe that this opportunity has truly benefited me and has given me the insight into interacting with both children and fellow colleagues. Seeing the joy a child expresses after all the hard work they have put in to learn and perfect a new skill is what inspires me to go further into coaching.

5. What would you say to anybody who is interested in volunteering with NLL / getting involved in sports coaching?

A true interest for both gymnastics and the young people is needed to enjoy the volunteer work. It is rewarding to see how your hard work impacts the child as they progress and their enthusiasm grows for the sport.

6. Any other comments?

Throughout my time volunteering I have gained confidence in myself and this experience has given me a clearer idea of my future goals!

All of us here at NL Leisure would like to say a big thank you to both Jennifer & Anna for their hard work and wish them luck with their upcoming Level 1 Gymnastics course! Be sure to check back soon for more great stories coming soon.
