You will all know Dave as the assistant manager at Ravenscraig, but don’t let the shirt and tie fool you. Dave has been smashing his fitness goals by taking part in a gruelling triathlon in Barcelona.

Dave started his rigorous training a whole year before the event. Dave’s training started with regular sessions in the gym which consisted of nine sessions per week which he divided equally for bike, run and swim work. This accounted for 10 to 20 hours training per week, which he juggled around work and family commitments.

Dave has tackled two similar events before this one, starting off as part of a bucket list. Once Dave started to tick off his accomplished goals, he thought he would never do it again. Competing in these challenges gave Dave an adrenaline rush which led to triathlon’s being a huge hobby of his.

The Barcelona Iron Man Competition took place in Calella just outside the cosmopolitan city of Barcelona, on the 2nd October 2016. Leading up to the event, Dave said “There was a buzz around the town, basically the triathlon community take over.” On the day, there was an exhibition area with stall holders selling equipment, massage/physio areas and large promotions from the Iron Man brand. A massive 3000 competitors took part in what was the biggest Iron Man event ever in terms of entry numbers. The event attracted thousands of spectators who gathered to witness the epic challenge.

Dave set off on his challenge in 25 degree heat completing a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run. Dave said “I had a good swim and bike but the run was a struggle as I was carrying an injury. Stuart Livingston from Sports Development does sports massage and he had carried out a lot of work on my foot. My main goal always is to finish, it is such a great feeling. The time is not important”

The picture below depicts the moment Dave crossed the finishing line.

Dave’s hard work has paid off and he is now planning his next half Iron Man in May of this year, pushing towards another full Iron Man challenge at the end of the year.

When asked what advice he would give to anyone looking to take part in a triathlon, Dave said “Go for it. It’s all in the mind and anybody can do it. It is a case of mind over matter”.

As I am sure you will all agree, this is such a fantastic achievement for Dave and I am sure there is more to come! Dave is our well-deserved NLL staff legend for the month of January.

That’s all for this month’s NLL Staff Legend. Stay tuned for more inspiring stories coming soon!
