NL Leisure Hall of Fame - David Wilson
David Wilson, one of our Badminton coaches with us here at NL Leisure held a Badminton event at the Iain Nicolson centre on Sunday 12th November to help raise money for Children In Need. The event was a huge success, with David raising more than 3-times his intended target!
We caught up with David, and you can read his story below:
1. Tell us about the day?
The day ran from 10am to 6pm. Myself and a few of the team captains arrived early to help decorate the hall with Children In Need signs and posters and a load of balloons! We also had some music playing which was good for the atmosphere!
The team captains – Yvonne Jackson, Gary Hair, Euan Murray, Robbie Hutchins, Craig Smith, Jason Robertson and Craig McCandlish were all a great help in organising things with Euan’s team running out extremely close winners in the end!
2. What made you decide to put this on?
This is the first time I have organised anything for Children In Need and have only ever really taken part in any school activities years ago. The reason I decided to run the event was firstly just a good excuse to play badminton all day but I also have a belief that sport in general should be used to make a positive impact in the community as a whole. A lot of badminton competitions are quite serious and competitive. This however was an attempt to bring people of mixed abilities together for an enjoyable day whilst raising money to go back into the community to help make positive changes for those in need.
3. How much did you raise?
The Just Giving page (www.justgiving.com/2100challenge) is currently sitting at £1,780 however I know there is still at least £100 still to be added - possibly more - so I am hopeful we may even have broken the £2,000 mark.
I am delighted with this as when I first decided to run the event I was hoping to raise around £600!
4. Any other comments?
I would just like to add that the team captains were a major part of organising the day and I couldn’t have done it without them. NL Leisure and Grant Shearer (Racquet Sports Development Officer) were a big help, as well as the staff at the Iain Nicolson Centre.
I’d also like to thank all who participated and helped out as they made the day extremely enjoyable!
All of us here at NL Leisure would like to say a huge well done to David and the rest of the team for their excellent fundraising efforts!
