Meet The Team - Melanie Menzies
Meet the Team – Melanie Menzies
Meet Melanie Menzies, our Health & Wellbeing manager who has worked with us at NL Leisure for almost 30 years. Mel has held various roles within the organisation during her time, and you can read her story below.
1.Tell us a bit about yourself?
My name is Melanie Menzies, a long time serving member of NL Leisure and a bit of a Handball fanatic, the best sport in the world obviously - with its roots firmly embedded in Cumbernauld!
2. How long have you worked with NL Leisure for?
I started working in 1989 as Assistant Manager at the Tryst Sports Centre covering a maternity leave and then went on to a role as a Sports Development Officer, Community Health and Fitness Manager and I am currently the Health and Wellbeing Manager for NL Leisure.
3. Tell us about your role?
I have the best job. It’s all about helping people get more physically active with a special focus on those who have health issues and who maybe need a little bit more help to fully enjoy the benefits of getting moving. I work extensively with our partners in the NHS, VANL and NLC to try and connect as many people as possible to the great activities happening in our venues to inspire them back on the road to health and fitness.
I am most proud of our amazing members in our Specialist Health classes, many of whom have significant health issues but who attend week in week out getting stronger, healthier and getting a chance to forget about their health problems for a wee while in the fabulous fun environments created by our Specialist Health Instructors.
4. What do you like to do in your spare time?
Well, I love our Group Fitness Programmes and teach Body Pump, RPM and Metafit at the Tryst and Broadwood - early mornings and at night. This is awesome fun and a massive privilege to walk part of the way with our members to help them reach their fitness goals – I am totally humbled by the efforts that the participants put into their workouts…so you could say my favourite place is at the bar…the Body Pump Bar of course!!
5. Fun fact about yourself?
I once sold a pair of shoes to Joanna Lumley when I was a poor student working in Dolcis in Princes Street in Edinburgh, and yes she was gorgeous close up and super friendly!
6. Any other comments?
Biggest tip for everyone…it doesn’t matter where you start – the important bit is starting, find the activity you like and then challenge yourself to get a wee bit better each time you do it!
