Meet The Team - John Kelly
This week we have a new instalment of our ‘Meet the Team’ feature and this time it is the turn of John Kelly! John Kelly is our PGA golfer at Palacerigg Golf Course & Lochview Family Golf Centre. John has worked with NLL for five years and has been a great ambassador of the sport over these years. When John retired from professional golf his weight began to rise until he was around 18 stone. John had decided that it was time to do something about this and began his own weight loss challenge. John took up running and recently completed the Stirling Marathon – a fantastic achievement!
Not only has John embarked on an amazing weight loss journey, he has also raised vital funds for Yorkhill Hospital over the years. John has now raised almost £10,000 in the last 10 years. We spoke to John and he told us all about his weight loss journey and fundraising efforts.
You can read John’s bio below:
1. How long have you worked at NLL for?
I’ve worked for NLL for around 5 years now.
2. Also, how long have you been a member of NLL for?
I was a member at NLL long before I started my role and have been a member for around 10 years.
3. What NLL venues do you attend when working out?
I attend both Broadwood and Airdrie centres.
4. When did you retire from professional golf?
I retired from professional golf 4 years ago now.
5. What motivated you to start your weight loss journey?
In my current role I am working with kids a lot, and felt that I needed to be healthier. Since the start of my weight loss journey I’ve gone from 18 stone to 13stone 7lbs.
6. Did you have a goal when you started this journey?
Yes I did. My original goal was to run a marathon and I’m delighted to say that I’ve now completed that!
7. Completing a marathon is a fantastic achievement, how did you feel when you crossed the finishing line?
I was very happy and excited about this achievement. So much so that I’m now planning on going abroad next year with our very own Dougie Holmes to run another one. Through running half marathons, now a marathon, and a few other things I’ve now raised just less than £10,000 for Yorkhill Hospital over the last 10 years.
8. Would you have any words of advice for somebody who is wanting to start their weight loss journey?
Yes, break it down into small segments and take things one day at a time. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! This way you’ll be better equipped to reach your goals.
9. Any other comments?
Yes, I’d just like to say a massive thank you to all the staff at the centres who have helped me on my journey.
