Tell us about yourself and your job?
My name is David or Disco Dave to my class participants and friends. This is because of my many interests. I used to be a DJ and my classes are like being in a nightclub, obviously because of my energetic performances. I am nearly 40 and married with two young children. In my day job I am a Venue Manager based at the Tryst Sports Centre for the last two years. I manage the day to day running of the venue making sure myself and the team are providing the best possible service to our members. My previous roles over the last 17 years have included Assistant Manager, Health and Fitness Manager, Gym Manager, Gym Instructor and Lifeguard. My evening job is a Group Fitness Instructor and I have done this for over 15 years. I teach Body Attack, Body Pump, Body Combat, Spin, Circuits and, willpower and grace.
What interested you in a career in the health and fitness industry?
I completed my pool lifeguard at school when I was 16 and loved it. I was also doing a lot of health and fitness at the time. When the opportunity came to apply as a Leisure Attendant/Lifeguard, I jumped at the chance and worked as a Lifeguard/Supervisor/Duty Manager for three years before moving into health and fitness. My group fitness passion started the first time I went to a Boxercise class and loved it. I thought ‘I could teach this’ and not long after that I got the opportunity to do the Body Combat course. It took me a little longer to find my way with Combat because it involved working to the music, but my martial arts experience helped with the technique and before long we were launching and I was getting regular attendances of over 100 in my classes. I then took it upon myself to do exercise to music and adapted physical activity for people with disabilities, (now GP referral) in my own time. The best thing about working in this industry for me is seeing people enjoying themselves while taking part in activities, whether it is group fitness, or any activity we offer that helps keeping them fit. The best feeling comes from when they come to you and tell you how much of a difference it has made to their lives.
What are your hobbies?
I love music, martial arts, as well as recreational activities with my family and friends.
As mentioned before I used to DJ and still can be seen at a family party playing all styles of music and having a great time doing it. I usually make my own mixes of my favourite tunes as opposed to going out to buy compilation albums with a gamble on the content. I enjoy doing martial arts and have been doing various styles for over 24 years. Starting out doing Tae Kwon Do for nine years, dipping in and out of Muay Thai, Karate, Kupso and most recently I have been doing Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu. When I was younger I loved competing and was in the Scottish team for my federation and won various titles for my grade. Nowadays I do it more for the fitness and knowledge as opposed to competing. Nothing beats spending quality time with my family and friends and is one of the reasons why I keep fit. To keep up with them I need to be fit.
That’s all for our ‘Meet The Team’ segment. Stay tuned for all the latest news and events coming soon!
