Tell us about yourself and your job?
My name is David Gray and I am 58 years old. I have been employed with NL Leisure for the past six years. I started an apprenticeship with Property Services, Department of Environment in Glasgow at the age of 16 and was with them for four years working as painter and decorator but I was quickly promoted to charge hand in my third year. I then became a tutor to young unemployed youths at the Springburn Association where I trained youngsters to paint and decorate pensioners’ houses for free.
I then moved on to Expandite, which specialises in expansion joints in buildings and roads as I wanted to expand my knowledge in the building trade. I was there for six months until the company closed down. I then joined Glasgow District Council for a temporary contract of six months and ended up staying 13 years as a painter and decorator. Then I became a Line Controller which earned me a promotion to senior rank and in charge of all administration on site. In addition to this I was the Asbestos Co-ordinator for the whole of Glasgow.
I then moved on to be the Assistant Manager in Queenslie Yard, which meant I was in charge of 1700 staff. I then left because I decided I can do this for myself, So I started my own business delivering painting and decorating and general maintenance as well as a picture framing business where I was very successful until 2009. This is when I had a heart attack which forced me to look at the amount of hours I was working. At this point I started with NL Leisure as a casual employee and I am now Leisure Supervisor. I have three sons and daughter and I wanted to be around for them as I am a family man and enjoy having my children around me. I now have two grandchildren and one due to be born on Christmas day!!
What interested you in a career in the health and fitness industry?
I was working with Clyde FC on a voluntary basis and The Duty Managers David Marrable and Gerry McMahon asked if I would be interested in casual employment as they thought I had the relevant life experience and skills needed to do the job, so I thought ‘why not!’. I was a good opportunity to work at the home of my football club Clyde FC. I am very passionate about Broadwood as a whole and knew if I could be a part of its growth and development I wanted to be there. That feeling has stayed with me until this day, there are so many memories here, my children grew up with Clyde FC, went to all their matches and my sons were involved in football here too.
What are your hobbies?
My hobbies are my family, children and grandchildren who keep me extremely busy!! I love making their lives easier with my DIY skills and general life experiences. Whatever my family are interested in I am interested in too, that’s what I live for. I was a football coach for 17 years in Cumbernauld coaching 7-14 year olds and loved every minute of it. I have met many honest and professional people through my time and some have become close friends. I look after my old neighbours doing odd jobs and look after their houses if they are away on holiday or in hospital.
Lastly, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
That’s all for this round of ‘Meet the Team’ stay tuned for the next instalment coming soon!
