John Smith Pool is Turning 80
One of Airdrie’s favourite landmarks is celebrating a big birthday this month as October marks the 80th anniversary of the opening of the town’s John Smith Pool.
Over the years the building has been through many changes but the original façade still stands proudly in the heart of the town, almost a century after it was unveiled by then Lord Lieutenant Sir James Knox in 1935.
The John Smith Pool is part of the Airdrie community shared heritage, linking many to their childhood swimming lessons. The pools health benefits and the fact that it is a cheap and accessible, makes it extremely popular.
Many in Airdrie and beyond will have fond memories of visits to the John Smith Pool and we are keen to hear as many as possible to help mark this important milestone.
If you have any stories, pictures or tales relating to the pool please get in touch with either David Lockhart or Claire Henry in the NL Leisure communications team by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 01236 263 306.
