Jennifer - Couch to 5k
Jennifer, 44, attended our Couch to 5k programme and we recently spoke to her about the programme and the benefits it brings! Read her story below.
1) Tell us a bit about yourself?
I’m 44. Lived a fairly active life, was in a competitive athletics club in my early teens (specialised in Long jump) and used walking/jogging as a source of de-stressing during exams, and also enjoyed kayaking as part of a club. I fell away from going to the gym due to a hip injury and training alone unmotivated me.
2) How did you join couch to 5k?
My good pal Libby sent me the link to the Job Scotland couch to 5k with the end point being the 5k in Drumpellier. Despite vowing never to do a 10 km again, I was interested in supporting my friend and starting a programme with someone else telling me how to progress- and at the right speed. I knew I wasn’t just unfit, but unhealthy. One definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results right? So I signed up. Time for a change.
3) What was your goal?
My initial motivation - to slowly progress my fitness and support my friend. To literally get off the couch and away from mobile phone screens and mind numbing scrolling. To be enthused about something again.
4) How did I feel after the first session?
I was pleased and pleasantly surprised. I was happy to meet others at the same level, knowing they were in the same boat made me feel at ease. I felt supported and determined.
5) What benefits have you found from Couch to 5k programme?
I really enjoyed being able to see and feel how we have progressed by jogging the same route, and realising we have managed to run further without walking or gasping for air. Couch to 5k has helped my mental health enormously. By just getting out the house and doing something with other people has been great.
6) What’s next?
My plans after the 5k? To continue once a week at jog Scotland, occasional park runs and I will cycle at the weekend to work up to the pedal for Scotland ride. Then I will look for another event to work towards.
I have flirted over the years with the idea that I would like to do a triathlon (just once, to tick that box) but that is very long term thinking.
