The North Lanarkshire Team at the International Children’s Games and have come home with a brilliant haul of two gold medals, two silver medals and a hatful of personal bests.

In athletics, Lucy Somerville won gold in the 800m.  Lucy, aged 15 from Muirhead, is a member of the Airdrie Harriers.  Beth Tobin, 15, from Cumbernauld and Eilidh Hagerty from Coatbridge both made it to round two of the 100m but were eliminated.

Teenager Greg Dalziel, aged 14, from Airdrie, won gold in the singles golf tournament and went on to win silver in the doubles tournament along with Scott Thomson, from Coatbridge, also aged 14.

In the pool Duncan McKinney, aged 14, from Auchinloch and Mark Hill from Motherwell just missed out on the medal positions in early events but recorded some fantastic 'PBs'.   Meanwhile Robin Morrison and Tegan Kerr both from Cumbernauld took third place in their B finals for the 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly respectively.

Despite the disappointment of losing out in a quarter final place North Lanarkshire’s footballers believe the experience will be invaluable to their future development in the sport.

James Miller, aged 15 from Coatbridge, said:

“We played well throughout the tournament and we’ve been a bit unlucky not to go through.

“We’re disappointed to have missed out but the experience has been great and we’re really grateful to our coach Nicky Laughlin and everyone at NL Leisure for all their support.”
