Tata - Kids of Steel gives North Lanarkshire children the chance to shine

There is still time to enter your school for free into the Tata Kids of Steel Triathlon at Wishaw Sports Centre on Tuesday 9th June. Tata Steel provides bikes, helmets, swim caps, gym sack and medals. The event is running from 9.30am to 3.30pm for ages 8 to 13 years.

More than 500 school pupils from across North Lanarkshire are ready to test their strength and agility at this year’s Tata Kids of Steel triathlon in Wishaw.

The event is to take place on Tuesday 9 June at NL Leisure’s Wishaw Sports Centre from 9.30am – 3.30pm where the children taking part will swim, cycle and run their way through a challenging course. This is one of 10 Kids of Steel events across the country.  More than 550 children across North Lanarkshire took part in last year’s triathlon.

The Kids of Steel series is an all-inclusive triathlon which offers youngsters the opportunity to channel their inner champion.  The school children get to try something new and fun in a safe, non-competitive environment.

What the Schools Have to Say

Mrs McBride, Deputy Head Teacher, St Timothy’s Primary School, Coatbridge, said:

“St Timothy’s took part in the Tata – Kids of Steel triathlon last year and it is great to see it returning to North Lanarkshire.

“It will be fantastic to see all the school children running, swimming and cycling whilst having fun at the same time.

“I would encourage as many schools as possible to get involved as my pupils had the time of their life last year.”

The event is organised through a partnership with Tata, NL Leisure, Triathlon Scotland and the British Triathlon Foundation Trust.  The series are spread across the UK and since its inception the event has seen over 60,000 children introduced to the sport.  Tata and British Triathlon pride in their inclusivity and fully encourage children with Special Needs to participate.

Bernard Curran, Director at Tata Steel Europe, said:

“We are proud that the Wishaw Tata - Kids of Steel event tops the scale both in terms of children’s participation and employee volunteer activity.  The hugely popular event has captured the hearts of local people and enables us to reach-out to the local community.”

“Wishaw Sports Centre has been a perfect venue for this event – and we pay credit to NL Leisure for making the facility available to us.”
