BMX British Championships Winner - Josh Hanlon!

1. Tell us a bit about yourself?

I’ve been working for NLL for just over 4 years. I started as a BMX attendant at Broadwood BMX Track. This involved coaching BMX classes and maintaining the BMX track, hire bikes and safety kit. I currently work as The BMX Supervisor and part of the Sports Development Team. I am also the coach for the Cumbernauld Centurions who are the BMX Club based at Broadwood BMX Track.

2. How long have you been taking part in BMX for / competing?

I’ve been racing BMX for 12 years. I spent the first year riding at my local BMX track with my friends and competing in local races. It didn’t take me long to realise that I wanted to get involved in BMX racing more so the year after, I started competing in the National Series and raced at my first British Championships. I have been racing BMX ever since.

3. Tell us about the British BMX Championships?

The British Championships is a one off event at the end of each year where all of the UK’s best racers battle it out to become the British Champion. This year the British Championships was held in Blackpool.

4. Tell us a bit about winning the British Championships?

This year was a bit more special than any other British Championships as Blackpool is where I grew up and I raced for the Blackpool BMX club before moving to Glasgow to work at Broadwood BMX Track and coach for the Cumbernauld Centurions. I was also part of the team that built Blackpool BMX Track in 2011.

The race day didn’t start too well crashing in my first qualifying heat but I was able to get some good results in the next few races to progress to the final. In the final I was able to get a good start, leading the lap start to finish and taking the win. I’ve placed 2nd and 3rd before at the British Championships so it felt amazing to finally win one!

5. What would you say to anyone looking to get involved in BMX?

If you are interested in getting into BMX racing, we have plenty of sessions for all ages and abilities running at the Broadwood BMX Track. Whether you want to meet new friends, learn some new skills or if you want to be the next British Champion, we have it covered! If you'd like to get involved, you can email me at for more information.

All of us here at NL Leisure would like to say a huge well done to Josh on his fantastic victory at the British Championships! An excellent achievement and one that he should be immensely proud of.
