Agnes commenced her employment with Motherwell District Council at the old Wishaw Baths September 1st 1975 as one of the first female lifeguards within the building. Agnes at that point was a contracted Lifeguard, she then moved onto Swimming Teaching. Agnes moved from the old Wishaw baths to the new pool based at Wishaw Sports Centre in March 1996, she then started a full-time Swimming Teaching post in September 1998 and has continued within that role until now - Agnes will be retiring after 42 years of service in December!

1. After 42 years’ service as a swimming instructor, how does it feel to be retiring?

I’m feeling emotional but looking forward to the next chapter in my life!

2. What have been your favourite aspects of your job?

Working with great colleagues and being part of an excellent Team at Wishaw has been brilliant. In my role I enjoy seeing pupil’s progression from non-swimmers to all pupils progressing to Club Ready. Seeing pupils of all age groups ranging from babies to adults achieving their goals has been extremely rewarding. Having formed great relationships with parents of pupils and within the length of time I have taught, sometimes also teaching generations of the same families.

3. What would you say to somebody who is looking to pursue a career as a swimming instructor?

Gain as much experience within all areas of Swimming, enjoy what you are doing and that will come across when you are teaching. It's important that you stay motivated!

4. What are your plans for retirement?

I plan to do more travelling with my husband in our new motor home. I also hope to stay involved within NLL and the Swimming Teaching profession on a part-time basis.

All of us here at NL Leisure would like to wish Agnes a very happy retirement when it comes in December - and thank you for your fantastic service over the last 42 years. Well done Agnes!
