NL Schools make a splash
NL schools make a splash
The annual North Lanarkshire Schools Swimming Championships took place at Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex in Bellshill on Wednesday 5 November 2014. The event provided a performance focus for pupils within the authority and gave them the opportunity to demonstrate their aquatic excellence. The number of swimmers continues to increase, as did the number of schools represented. In many ways, the increase is down to the quality of NLL’s Learn to swim programme, the continued investment by both partners in the School Swimming programme and the local clubs who buy into this process. The organisation and structure of the event provided an opportunity for not only elite swimmers, but for many unattached swimmers at the grass roots level. As a result of this, local swimming clubs are able to recruit talented individuals and provide further development along the swimmer development pathway. The event once again returned to the Sir Matt Busby Sports Complex, which provided a magnificent backdrop for all the competitors, spectators and technical officials. The event allowed the swimmers to compete in a similar competitive environment as to that of the recent and very successful Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
Almost 300 children from 60 schools were represented with many setting Personal Best Times as well as achieving the qualifying time for the Scottish Schools Swimming Championship Finals which are to be held on 31 January 2015 at the newly opened Aberdeen Sports Village in Aberdeen.
This event could only be successfully staged as a result of a successful partnership between North Lanarkshire Leisure Ltd and NLC Learning & Leisure and of course the numerous volunteers who made the event viable.
The overall feedback has been great with many children looking forward to working hard and competing again for their school next year. Best of luck to all the successful qualifiers and the very best for January 2015.
