Blane Dodds, the Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure attended a presentation at St. Timothy’s Primary School in Coatbridge on Tuesday 27th March 2012 to present their pupils with their medals on becoming North Lanarkshire’s Sports Hall Athletics Champions for 2012.

Kat Heron, Acting Athletics Development Officer with North Lanarkshire Leisure said “Around 32 Primary 6 and 7 pupils competed in various indoor athletics events in the finals held at Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility on the 3rd February 2012. The field events included standing long jump, standing triple jump, vertical jump, javelin, chest push and speed bounce. The track events consisted of an obstacle relay 1+1 lap relay, 2+2 lap relay, 6 lap paarlauf, over and under relay and 4x1lap relay. It really is quite a challenging athletics programme and tough competition with high standards being displayed from all those who competed”.

Blane Dodds, the Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Leisure said “I was delighted to be asked to present the medals to recognise this significant achievement of the pupils from St. Timothy’s in winning this years sports hall finals, having competed against another 13 North Lanarkshire primary schools. Given that this is also the year of the London Olympics it’s important that we offer local athletics programmes and competition aimed at encouraging youngsters into the sport. This is an annual event with the Council’s Active Schools team organising the local heats leading up to the finals which is then co-ordinated by North Lanarkshire Leisure at Ravenscraig. St. Timothy’s then went on to compete in the national finals held in Irvine on the 24th February and put in a credible 6th place performance nationally”.

Ann Allen, Head Teacher of St. Timothy’s said “We named our team St. Timothy’s Tornadoes and we were over the moon when our pupils won this years indoor athletics competition at Ravenscraig and then went on to represent North Lanarkshire in the national finals. Last weeks medal ceremony at the school was our way of celebrating this achievement and recognising the hard work, dedication and team work that our pupils put into the competition”.
