Local Heroes in North Lanarkshire

Michelle Kelly you are our Local Hero for May.....

Welcome Michelle, we are delighted to announce you as NL Leisure's 'Local Hero' for May!

Michelle Kelly is 48 years young and a member at Ravenscraig Regional Sport Facility.

Michelle joined the gym with some help from her sister.....

Michelle is 48 and uses Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility. She has been an Access NL member for 2 years now.

Two years ago Michelle was 14 stone and 8lbs. She wanted to join a gym to lose weight and reduce her high blood pressure as she had just found out that it was too high. Her sister, Anne, a nurse at Wishaw General Hospital  at the time, saw a poster about the Access NL Membership Scheme and enquired on her behalf......the rest is history!!

After they both popped down and had a look around Ravenscraig, one of the reasons Michelle decided to join was that the membership scheme included regular one to one sessions with gym instructors. Michelle is blind and therefore needs assistance in her workout so with the help of ones to ones Michelle would be able to achieve her goals having constant assistance and advice.

She sets about her programmes over the past 2 years and makes the gym twice a week, and currently she uses the Treadmill, Rower, Bike and Gym Circuits....phew!!  She has lost over 4 stones and now weighs just 10st 1lb and has dropped from size 22 to size 12!  Michelle was also quite a swimmer in the past and still likes to swim although it is more leisurely now rather than serious.

Michelle is currently training for the women’s 10K, taking place in Glasgow on Sunday 12th May which Graham, her instructor is helping her prepare for. Her assistant Trish runs with her and they both completed the same race last year in 149minutes, and then the 10k in Glasgow in September over the Kingston Bridge in 150minutes (a minute slower because she stopped for a wee wee!!)

So here's hoping she makes it in 148minutes this time!!  We are all rooting for you Michelle...and Trish...Good Luck Girls!

Michelle says a great big thank you to the staff at Ravenscraig but equally the staff at Ravenscraig want to thank Michelle for making their jobs such a pleasure and for keeping them on their toes always!!
